This game is another way to disguise reading practice. If you limit the game time or number of rounds, your kids/ students will put a higher value to it, and ask to play.
This sight word game may be added to another sight word Matchit game or played as it is, alone. I chose the words from the Dolch Word list if first letter matches were available.

This game is an entertaining way to practice reading sight words (most on the Dolch Basic Sight Vocabulary English word list). For this game a player plays a card that either matches the color of the card’s word or comes next in alphabetical order. Either way, the player reads the card as he plays it.
There are 26 word cards, one for each letter of the alphabet. To keep this game moving smoothly, you will need at least four copies of these word cards (104 word cards) plus at least 10 wild (MatchIt) cards. Long and Short Vowel Old Maid Card Game- Fun practice with Phonics Games, http://tiny.cc/Phonicsgames
This week we have another Phonics card game. Practicing long and short vowel words help children recognize and pronounce the different ways you can find the different combinations.
As with each of the old maid card games, you may use cards from this game with the “Dog” game rules or any other game rules that use pairs of information.
Old Maid Games match pairs of information together to gain points. The answer key and rules are in the PDF if you need them.
This game has 25 different pairs, 10 just add -s or es, the other 15 pairs are listed in the Answer Key.
I suggest starting with the easier 10 and adding the other pairs slowly depending on grade level (over several games or over weeks).

This was created as a single player activity. If you have more than one student, print one for each player and have them race. Or with one activity, players could place the answers in a bowl or face down, taking turns clipping answers on and checking each other’s work.
The ‘labels’ can be printed on address labels and stuck to clothespins or printed on regular paper, cut apart and clipped with a clothespin (or paper clip).
